Today we had things to do, so we skipped our Thursday morning music playtime session and found ourselves with some time to spare before naptime.
Once Eddie was fed and sorted out, I popped her in the mini monkey sling and we headed out for a little “nature walk”. Inverted commas here because what it really was was us wandering down the street to the fire trail, doing a loop and coming home via the bush reserve at the other end of our street.
Talbot had a great time walking on the curb edge like a tight-rope walker (“watch ‘shish’, mummy!”), asking me “this way?” and saying “thank you mummy!” when I said she could run ahead a little. Ah, the simple things. Give them a taste of freedom and they think you’re the best.
We found big sticks, little leaves, fallen flower petals and gumnuts. We even found a discarded bird’s nest, which was delightful to the toddler. For about ten seconds.
It filled in half an hour, and she thought it was awesome. And I felt like a pretty good mum being all outdoorsy, because I’m the biggest home-body in the world, and feel a little bit bad that I don’t do these things more often. I’m glad it didn’t rain on me, because I’d never do it again, but since it didn’t, I think we can call it a successful activity.
